CoEd Varsity Cross Country vs. Laconia HS School

Game Date
Sep 16, 2017
Score
COUGARS: 0
LACONIA HIGH SCHOOL: 0

The Con-Val boys and girls cross-country teams headed north for the Laconia Invitational this weekend.  Both squads came out on top of the 11 team race, with the boys' victory hinging on a tiebreaker from the 6th man, Danny Veverka.

The ladies squad asserted themselves in the front pack early in the race despite toeing the line with last years DIII individual state champion and another top 5 finisher.  By the time they had covered the challenging 3.1 miles it was Con-Val taking the first three positions.  Rachel Hurley enjoyed the win and the pie that came with it, with Clare Veverka and Schuyler Michalak filling out the podium finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.  First-year cross-country runner Sarah Newell was the next cougar across the line in 9th with sophomore Marina McMahon taking the last scoring position for the Cougars finishing 13th overall.  The strong pack left second the place team over 40 points behind.

While the girls team entered this meet with high expectations the boys were just looking for a strong showing, and maybe sneaking into the top three.  Evan Coyne was looking to finish near the front after a 10th place finish here last year, and got his wish crossing the line 2nd overall and first for the team.  Birthday boy Harrison Kim was close behind finishing 4th overall.  Casey Burgess was third for the Cougars with a tight pack consisting of Max Boisvert, George Shiarella and Danny Veverka making the team title a possibility.  Races are scored using the finishing places of the top 5 runners from each team, with the lowest score prevailing.  With Belmont and Con-Val tied after 5 runners the 6th man served as a tiebreaker.  With Danny Veverka nearly 50 places ahead of Belmont's 6th it was a clear it would be Con-Val's day in the sun.

Both teams head to the Manchester Invitational this Saturday in one of New England's largest meets showcasing the best runners from the 6 state region.
